Personal History (OC/Malleable Protags):
Trystan Cleary was the first born child of Alys and Owen Cleary, followed a mere thirty four minutes later by his twin sister, Teagan. Two years later came younger sister Iola, and three years after that, his youngest sister, Cadie, was born. Tryst's early childhood was a happy one. His family was by no means wealthy, but they managed to get by, and things were good. The family lived on and worked a small farm, mostly raising goats and chickens and small vegetable crops. Tryst grew up used to modest means and pitching in with chores.
Trystan was a curious, bookish little thing who had dreams of studying the arcane. His mother always fostered this, praising him for even the smallest tricks of magic that he managed to learn. Quiet and thoughtful, like his mom, the two were exceptionally close. Tryst also go along with his sisters well, looking out for them as best he could even if they all terrorized each other (lovingly) as siblings are wont to do. He was exceptionally close to his twin, Teagan, since neither of them had never known a moment of life without the other. He was happy. All of them were happy. At least until Tryst's mother died when he was ten, a victim of some wasting disease that no healers they found could do anything for.
Alys' death changed everything, and it took an especially heavy toll on Trystan's father. Alys had been Owen's everything, and though he tried to keep going to do the best for his children, it was a challenge. Tryst's mother was an elf, his father a human, and Owen had never even considered that he could lose Alys to death. He was the one who was human, the one time fled through the hourglass in a torrential rush for. Not Alys. Her death changed everything. The relationship between Tryst and his father took the hardest hit; while his three sisters all took after his father, dark-haired and dark-eyed, Trystan was nearly identical to his mother, fair-haired, blue-eyed and gentle-natured.
This was when Tryst saw how badly love could break a person, how dangerous it was to allow so much of your heart to be given to another. Nothing in the world could ruin someone so fully, and Tryst decided then and there that falling in love was not for him. He wouldn't do it. Not after what it had done to his father. Owen Cleary was broken.
Even if Owen tried to hide it, Tryst was very aware that his father was reminded of his mother and what he lost every time he looked at him. It strained their relationship near to breaking until, when he was 15, Trystan decided it would be best for everyone involved if he left. He was nearly grown and perfectly capable of making it on his own. Maybe. Probably. And if it meant that his family could be happier, could maybe move past some of the grief and the daily reminder that his very existence seemed to be, then that would be for the best. The only person he told was his twin, and he slipped off planning to never look back.
Of course, very nearly the first thing that happened to him was an encounter on the road with a group of bandits who decided Trystan looked like an easy target. Which he was. Too easy, honestly. That didn't stop him from trying to fight back, and Tryst was very nearly a casualty of the road if not for the appearance of Leosin Erlanthar. Leo saved his life, and a very grateful Trystan did not hesitate to agree to pay him back for this someday in the future.
With Leo's help, Tryst made it to Waterdeep and struck out on his own. Despite being, by nature, a softspoken and quiet boy, Trystan had always been good at putting up a façade of confidence and extroversion when the need arose. With little money, he relied on this charm and his talent at lying to get by with what could only generously be called petty scams and taking odd jobs. The occasional picked pocket or petty theft. It wasn't much, but it was a living. He also took on an alias, mostly to distance himself from being found out by anyone who may have known his family. During his time in Waterdeep he went by Idris Carey.
After a while, he found a way to rely more heavily on his charisma and became a courtesan, and a fairly high class one at that, the Waterdeep equivalent of a high-end callboy. This work suited him, and certainly paid better, and he found himself with a definite taste for the nicer things in life. Tryst learned what threadcount meant and never forgot that lesson. He worked with men and women both, without any real preference except for who paid well. He got comfortable, had a number of regulars, and made a good name for himself over the years. He'd even managed to catch the attention of the Neverlady Brothel, one of the more prestigious establishments in the city, and his future seemed like it had a decent trajectory.
Of course, he wasn't so lucky. Not all clients were so generous and kind as his most cherished benefactors. One in particular, a man named Mabon Blackwood, took a little too possessive a liking to Tryst. Mabon was the entitled sort who'd grown up with more money than he knew what to do with thanks to his wealthy and influential family and who believed the world owed him everything that he wanted. He was also a beginner wizard, with questionable talent given that he'd been a "beginner wizard" for a few years now. More unfortunately, Mabon had a mean streak in him, and one too many times of taking this out on Tryst, and Trystan snapped back in self defense. He, in one of the few moments of physical force and ability in his life, smacked Mabon in the face with a nearby candlestick (and its lit candle) at just the right angle to knock him out. And briefly set his hair on fire. Panicking, Tryst smacked the flames out before they could really do any damage to anything but Mabon's coif, snatched up his things, the candlestick, and, in a fit of daring, Mabon's spellbook.
In retrospect, stealing the spellbook was probably a bad move given that it gave Mabon even more reason to be interested in retribution. Tryst decided it was time to move on to other climes. He ditched the alias of Idris, took back up his real name and left Waterdeep with rushed letters of apology and goodbye to a few favored clients, took what he could carry, and once more hit the road.
Right around this sudden flight from the city, he ran into a young woman named Agatha and the two decided to travel together for safety on the road. They shared an affinity for magic, though hers was more innate than his book-learned and still burgeoning skills. Not long after he'd left Waterdeep, a message found its way to him from Leosin that it was time to repay his debt. Monks, man. But honestly, it was great timing, since Trystan didn't really have much other idea for destination. Of course, the moment he saw the dragon circling Greenest he started having second thoughts about the whole thing.
But second thoughts or not, he owed Leosin a debt, and he wasn't going to go back on paying it. Entering town he and Agatha soon met up with a strange and chaotic little group. There was Jheri, the strong and formidable dragonborn fighter; Tremen, a rogue who changed their face as easily as others changed clothes; Elora, an outspoken druid; Ellia, a cleric with a great deal of tragedy in her past; and eventually Rainier, the innocent arsonist artificer who Tryst feels a strange kindred spirit towards.
Trystan has come to appreciate this odd little band. He'd managed to spend the past eight years of his life in Waterdeep without making any real close connections. He had his regular clients, he had colleagues and acquaintances. He was friendly with everyone. But actually letting anyone in? That hadn't happened since he left home, right up until he met Agatha. The sorcerer has found her way into his heart, reminding Tryst how that organ works. He has found himself caring deeply for his new friends, especially Agatha, and would do anything in his power to keep them safe in the dangers that they are facing. He wants them all to be safe and happy.
And about those dangers. Somehow Tryst has found himself drawn into trying to save the world from the machinations of the evil dragon Goddess Tiamat and her equally evil cultists. So far the group has managed to rescue Leosin, destroy several dragon eggs, beat a half dragon champion named Cyanrath, defeated a Lich (while they were on holiday from cult chasing), solved the murder and familial troubles of a famous bard, tracked the cult through Baldur's Gate, protected a Caravan (and matchmade a young half-elf ranger along the way) and arrived in Waterdeep -- home sweet home. Tryst has missed his stomping grounds. Of course, now he's a wanted man with Mabon having put a bounty out on him, but hey. Could be worse. At least he's wanted. That's always nice.
There was, of course, the small run in with Takhisis, another horrifying evil goddess, who managed to get directly into his head. He may have been in terrible trouble if not for his friends, but even though his allies did rescue him (and Ellia and her good Dragon God did manage to cleanse the worst of it from his mind) the fear and discomfort of that encounter has definitively impacted him and the trauma of it lingers.
Appearance: A young, half-elf man of average-ish height (5'9") with blond hair, bright blue eyes and a tendency to dress very well, even when he's out on the road. Here's a pic! Here's another pic! Here's a shirtless pic! Here's a confused pic!
Current Condition: Unbothered. Moisturized. Happy. In His Lane. Focused. Flourishing.
Abilities:
Tryst is a wizard whose specialty in enchantment. He excels at spells that bring people temporarily under his sway, charming or beguiling. He also has other tricks up his sleeve in more traditionally offensive spell-hurling styles as well as several more utility-based spells. He also can summon a familiar, a fox named Enid who he will desperately need and want back as soon as possible because she is his emotional support fox. All his spells are listed out on his character sheet here!
He's also very good at sex, thank you.
And lying. And forgery.
Inventory: Spellbook (currently not exactly useful), gold, backpack with change of clothes (female and male presenting), makeup (disguise kit), several gemstones. I assume the Fae will take his Wand of Winter which will make him sad.
Personality: Please pick five (5) of these questions to answer! Please try to keep answers between 100-300 words for each question.
❧ What event has had the biggest impact on your character? In what ways has it changed the way they see others and themselves?
Trystan's mother's death is the single event that has affected him the most. It not only shattered the illusion of a perfect family that he had known, it changed his entire outlook on love and allowing others close to you. He watched his father break into pieces and never manage to reassemble himself. He decided then and there he'd never let that happen to him, and it's affected how he's approached relationships and friendships from then on out.
Tryst is an effortless flirt, all confidence and charisma, talking himself into and out of trouble like it's an artform. But he does not let people close at all. Sex is a pleasant distraction, a useful skill and a marketable talent, but emotions don't really have a place in any of that. There's some level of denial and delusion in this, but Tryst will never admit it, will never admit that he really craves being close to someone, to being loved and being brave enough to open his heart. He's entirely too frightened of the consequences for it though. He's the first to admit that he's not a brave man, after all.
❧ How does your character handle stressful situations?
Trystan is a talker. He prefers words to diffuse situations, to try to avoid direct conflict where possible. He's managed to succeed in this fairly often in his life, so he falls back on this approach often. He can hold his own in a fight, but that's so much effort and so messy. Also he's very squishy and does not enjoy the idea of pain, thanks.
When it's less immediate danger stress and more just a stressed out time, Tryst tends to grow quiet. His entire persona of extroversion and charm is something of a mask. At his core, Tryst is a quiet, gentle, introverted little thing who would be happiest curled up with a book. So stressed out Tryst is a much less outspoken Tryst, keeping to himself and doing a lot of cuddling with Enid. He will, however, try to keep up appearances if there are others around him because what is admitting weaknesses anyway? How does that work?
❧ What does home mean to your character? When was the last time they were home and how will they deal with being away?
Right now, Trystan thinks of Waterdeep as home. But that's only because it's the place he lived for any long stretch recently. He knows the streets, knows the vibes, the general populace, has familiar faces there. So yeah, of course that's home, right? Except it's not, and it never has been. Trystan hasn't been home since he ran away from his family farm when he was fifteen. He misses it sometimes, that feeling of being with people who care about him despite all his many and multiple flaws, but it's safer and better for everyone that he's chosen to leave.
Though since he's come to meet his current group of misfits, he's starting to get that feeling of care and belonging again. Weird. Maybe he's been home for a while now.
Except now he's in a weird Faewild world. It's not his first time off on his own, and he's not the frightened kid he was then, so he'll manage. With panache. Because if you're going to do something, you should do it with style.
❧ What lie does your character tell themselves the most often? What lie do they tell other people?
Tryst tells himself that he really doesn't need anyone. Of course he doesn't. Yes, he loves his sisters and misses them, especially his twin. He misses his father. But they're all better off without him (and he sends them money anonymously regularly, so it's not like he's abandoned them) and he's fine on his own. In fact, he's safer on his own. Letting people close makes you vulnerable. Loving people gives them the power to ruin you -- even if they don't mean to. People leave. People die. And hearts, well, sometimes hearts break so badly they never can be put back together again. Who would ever want to risk that? He is fine alone and doesn't need love to be happy. All of this is a huge lie, but he's getting better at believing it.
The lie Tryst tells everyone else? Basically his entire persona. The smooth-talking charismatic confident extroverted flirt? That's all a mask. It's a comfortable mask, and it fits well, but it's very much a defense. Deep down, Trystan is quiet, gentle, not unconfident but certainly not so bold about it. He's a nerd at heart.
❧ What does your character want most, and what do they need most?
Trystan wants to learn to be a more powerful wizard and then retire back into a comfortable life in a city. Maybe join up at one of the high end brothels and go back to his previous career. Adventuring and saving the world is great and all, very exciting, but there's something to be said for safety and comfort. He wants a soft bed and a warm fire and nice clothes. Of course, now he also wants his friends to be happy and close enough that he gets to see them regularly.
What he needs is someone to smack him off the back of the head and make him realize that he can't close everyone out forever and that human (elven, gnomish, halfling, etc.) connection is important for anyone to be a functioning person. He needs to work on the trauma of losing his mother and losing his father (even if his father is technically still alive) and reconnect with his siblings. He needs someone to hold him and let him cry for a good long while.
